FRIDAY NIGHT DRAMA: My Lovable Girl

title

This past week brought with it the end of the idol-studded melodrama My Lovable Girl and since it’s nearly impossible to ignore anything Rain stars in, I just had to offer this one up for your weekend drama to marathon.

Look familiar

Originally airing Wednesdays and Thursdays on SBS, My Lovable Girl is the story of a big-time composer, Lee Hyun Wook (Rain) who gives up on life after losing his girlfriend in a fatal car accident. After wallowing in misery for three years, Hyun Wook learns his lost love has a younger sister and in an attempt to ease his conscience over the guilt he feels over the death of his girlfriend, he decides to step back into the land of the living to secretly improve the life of this down-and-out girl, Yoon Se Na (Krystal Jung) who dreams of becoming a songwriter. As luck would have it, Hyun Wook just so happens to be able to step into the role of president of an entertainment company and as such, he’s able to offer Se Na a chance at making her dreams come true. As the two struggle to adjust to life in the fast-paced and highly competitive world of K-Pop, they turn to each other for strength and inspiration but an ugly secret stands between them and a lifetime of happiness.

back off

As one would expect from a story focused on a couple with such a twisted destiny, there’s a whole lot of drama in this drama and most of it stems from the fact that Hyun Wook refuses to tell Se Na about his past relationship with her dead older sister. Right from the beginning, Hyun Wook knew he needed to tell Se Na about his past but no matter how many times the opportunity presented itself, he refused to spill the beans and it’s this constant refusal that ultimately led to me writing off Hyun Wook as the biggest hoser on the face of the planet. The sad part is, I spent a whole lot of time during the first half of this drama torn between my desire to cheer for Hyun Wook and my desire to smack him upside the head. Ultimately my desire to smack him won out because let’s face it, not matter how cute she is, you don’t hook up with your dead girlfriend’s little sister. It’s just wrong!

the end

Sadly my frustration with this drama doesn’t end with Hyun Wook. It seems every single character in this drama is determined to prove they’re a jerk, in one way or another, and I spent a ridiculous amount of time wishing different characters would just walk off the face of the Earth. I guess I’m not cut out to handle so many levels of jealousy at once because I found both Shin Hae Yoon (Cha Ye Ryun), the long-time friend and unrequited lover of Hyun Wook, and Jae Young, the jealous ex-best friend who also had a thing for Se Na’s sister, to be ridiculously annoying. Their constant need to meddle in other people’s lives screwed things up in so many ways and the only redeeming thing I can say about either of them is that Jae Young, in his desperate attempt to ruin Hyun Wook’s life, finally told Se Na the truth about Hyun Wook’s relationship with her sister. As bad as that sounds, I honestly wanted to give that man a medal at that point because someone needed to let that poor girl in on the secret.

Myungsoo

Now I realize I’m making this drama sound pretty much awful and to some extents it was but there’s one redeeming factor in this drama that is so good and so wonderful, it makes the entire thing worth watching and that’s the adorable Shi Woo (Kim Myung Soo). Oh my goodness! Shi Woo is without a doubt, one of the most wonderful seconds ever in the history of Drama Land and I should warn you now, if you tend to suffer from Second Lead Syndrome, watch out because this boy is going to make you suffer like you have never suffered before! I swear, every time Shi Woo made an appearance my heart started racing, my breath would catch in my throat and ultimately I’d end up squeeing like a fangirl. (Oh wait…) Whether you’re a fan of L (Myung Soo) or not, you’re going to find yourself falling for Shi Woo because he’s really the most adorable character ever. He’s the perfect mix of cocky and sweet with just enough wounded puppy in there to make your heart instantly go out to him and he only gets more irresistible as the story progresses.

Myungsoo kills me

While My Lovable Girl may not be the world’s greatest drama, it’s not the worst and if you’re a fan of any of the idols starring in this drama, you’re probably going to want to give it a go. I can’t guarantee you’ll be singing its praises but you may enjoy the sixteen hours of Rain and I can almost guarantee you’ll enjoy the occasional sprinkling of Myung Soo. Whether you liked this drama or you hated it, I’d love to know your thoughts so be sure to let me know what you thought by leaving me a comment below! Oh! By the way… If you’d like a more in-depth review of this drama, you can join Hallyu Tanya and me as we discuss each week’s episodes in our Hallyu Zombie Drama Review which you can find HERE.

  1. There’s was nothing that great about My Lovable Girl, yet I kept watching week after week. The only thing I especially liked was the soundtrack. Oh yeah! The romance between Krystal and Rain’s characters were dry as are the side characters. The story line was super bland. I don’t want to ruin the ending for those who didn’t watch, but the ending led me in disappointment as well. It’s one of those, “is it over?” kind of endings. I am reminded of Temptation and To The Beautiful You, which I just watched. I think To The Beautiful You was also not that great, yet I loved that drama more than My Lovable Girl, I guess, cause’ there is the super cute Lee Hyun Woo in it. L is also in My Lovable Girl, but I feel his character was constantly selfish so I couldn’t root for him too much. As for Rain, I still rather watch “Full House” a couple more times. Krystal’s character was also boring and her character was boring to watch.

BTW – off topic, Zombie Mamma, Lee Pil Mo is in Pinocchio! *goes crazy*

  2. I don’t think I’d want to marathon this. I was relieved when this drama ended. (Even though the ending was less than satisfying.) It wasn’t good enough to sit and watch all at once. It worked as a filler while waiting for new episodes of better dramas to come out, but overall was a big disappointment. It had potential, but it was a flop. The plot wasn’t good, the characters weren’t likeable, and Krystal’s acting was flat. I agree that L was adorable, but he couldn’t carry this by himself – especially when he was regularly cast aside by people around him. If you want to watch a recently finished drama, go with “Blade Man”. The characters were SO lovable. I felt sad that it ended, yet happy with the ending.
