FRIDAY NIGHT DRAMA: Sensory Couple

a moment

It feels like forever since I last wrote one of these FNDs and I do apologize for that. Life has taken a turn for the busier and it’s been a little difficult to keep up. However, one of my most recent favorite dramas just ended and I couldn’t let an opportunity to talk about it go by because that would just be wrong! I mean when you’ve got the likes of Park Yoo Chun and Shin Se Kyung pairing up in a drama, you know it’s gonna be good!

confession

Originally airing on SBS starting back in April, Sensory Couple (or if you prefer the literal title, The Girl Who Sees Smells) follows the stories of Choi Eun Seol (Shin Se Kyung) and Choi Moo Gak (Park Yoo Chun) a pair of unlucky misfits who are brought together by fate and a serial killer. Three years ago, Eun Seol comes home from school to find her parents dead at the hands of a serial killer. Shocked to be interrupted in his work, the killer goes after Eun Seol who has the presence of mind to run away. Unfortunately in her desperate attempt to escape, Eun Seol is hit by a car and her world goes dark. In an attempt to tie up all his loose ends, the murderer follows Eun Seol to the hospital and kills her while she’s lying in the ER. What he doesn’t know is that he’s actually killed the wrong Eun Seol. While the Eun Seol he was after was in a different wing of the hospital, lying in a coma, the Eun Seol he killed in the ER was actually the younger sister of Choi Moo Gak. Determined to avenge his sister’s death, Moo Gak joins the police force, hoping to one day become a member of the murder investigation team. Fast forward three years and Moo Gak is a senseless (as in most of his senses no longer work) police officer sitting in his box while Eun Seol wakes from her coma, with no idea of who she is or why she’s being bombarded by all these strange images. It turns out Eun Seol (now Oh Cho Rim) woke from her coma with a very strange ability to see smells and one ghostly pale blue eye. As Fate would have it, Cho Rim and Moo Gak team up in the most unlikely of ways and are quickly caught up in the case of the Barcode Killer, a serial killer who marks all his victims with a gruesome barcode carved into their forearm. As the case unfolds unexpected connections between victims and survivors are made, romance blossoms and multiple lives are on the line as the Killer moves to claim his next victim.

If there’s one thing I love it’s an original story, driven by unique and believable characters and a plot line that always leaves you guessing and that’s exactly what Sensory Couple is. This murder-mystery/romantic comedy is such a crazy combination of hilarity, cuteness and terror that you can’t help but love it. I honestly don’t know how the writers managed to create such a suspenseful and exciting story that was still so full of both cute and hilarious moments, but they did! I swear, there were some moments when I watched this drama on the edge of my seat, scared out of my wits as the murderer stalked his prey and then there were other times I was rolling on the floor with tears streaming down my face because Moo Gak and Cho Rim were just so funny.

oh my goodness

I have to give props to the cast of this drama because they all did a fantastic job of making me believe these characters were real. Moo Gak and Cho Rim were two of the most adorable and lovable leads you’ll ever come across in the Dramaverse and watching their story unfold was so much fun. *spoiler alert* On the opposite end of the spectrum, Kwon Jae Hee was probably one of the most terrifying villains I’ve ever come across and I have to tell you, I’ve watched Nam Goong Min in a lot of roles but this one is probably my favorite. He makes being the bad guy look so darn good!

if only you knew

If you’re looking for a fast-paced, adorable, funny murder mystery (how’s that for a list of requirements?) you really can’t go wrong with Sensory Couple. With sixteen episodes to its name, there’s plenty of time for character development while the story clips along at a nice pace. Really only the last two episodes seemed to drag a little but not enough to really take away from the story as a whole. The characters are all very lovable (or hate-able, depending on how you feel about swoon-worthy bad guys), the mystery is complex enough to keep you guessing but simple enough to leave you no doubt about its resolution) and honestly, it’s just a really fun drama to watch. (I mean who doesn’t want an excuse to sit and watch Park Yoo Chun be adorable for sixteen hours?)

quite a team

So for those of you who watched this drama while it aired, I want to know what you thought of it. Which parts/moments/characters were your favorites? Which could you have done without? Were you satisfied with the ending or would you have rather seen things play out differently? For those of you who haven’t watched it yet, do you think you’ll give it a shot? I want to know what you’re thinking so be sure to let me know in the comments below!

  1. There were so many cute moments between Moo Gak and Cho Rim. I could gush all day about them. Moo Gak was just so darn cute!! He would tease her in a light-hearted way and sometimes he was so ridiculously goofy that you couldn’t resist his charms. He was the knight in shining armor and Choi Rim was often a damsel in distress (even though she seemed a bit clueless about how dangerous her situation was). The police were bumbling idiots and there were so many “what?!” moments that didn’t make sense but you forgot them all when the OTP was together or when the evil Chef took off his shirt. Oh my!! Trust me, it’s worth the wait. I was disappointed that the brilliant mastermind criminal managed to perform such a crappy, low-budget final act of desperation (it really was beneath his ability to plant a ridiculous looking bomb under a doormat). And we never got to find out all of the backstory for our mastermind, either. But again…I didn’t really mind. The ending was sweet, the couple was adorable, justice was served, and there was enough suspense to keep me coming back for more. I was sad when it ended.
