FRIDAY NIGHT DRAMA: Switch Girl, Season One

title

It seems short drama series have somehow become theme of the month so I might as well keep things going with a quick review of Switch Girl, Season One.

Based on the manga by Aida Natsumi, Switch Girl originally aired on Fuji TV in 2011. It’s the story of Tamiya Nika (Nishiuchi Mariya), a popular high school girl who seems to have everything together when in reality she’s actually hiding a dark secret. In the comfort of her own home, Nika “switches off” her glamorous persona and the real Nika is revealed. Crude, crass and completely uncouth Nika is the exact opposite of what everyone at school expects her to be. Somehow she manages to keep this secret from her classmates, that is until super-cute transfer student Arata (Kiriyama Renn) enters the scene. Stealing her heart and uncovering her secret, Nika wonders if Arata could ever love a girl like her. Little does she know, Arata has a secret of his own.

Because this series is so short (as in eight, 30-minute episodes short) I don’t want to go into a lot of detail because if I do, I’ll end up giving the whole series away and that would just suck. So, what I will tell you is this short little drama is a whole lot of fun. Crazy, spazzy and so utterly ridiculous it’s funny, Switch Girl is everything you’d expect a manga-based drama to be and I enjoyed every minute of it. Sometimes you just need a little crazy in your life and this drama fits the bill nicely.

If you’re looking for a short break from the ordinary and you’re up for some ridiculously crazy fun, Switch Girl may be just what you’re looking for. It’s certainly an entertaining way to spend a few hours and the good news is, if you find yourself craving more of Nika and Arata’s adventures, there’s a Season Two waiting for you! Yippee!

So tell me, what did you think of Switch Girl? Are you a fan of manga-based dramas? Do you have a favorite you think I should watch? You know I love talking about all sorts of dramas so be sure to let me know what you’re thinking by leaving me a comment below!

  1. I did like this over the top little drama. Generally I am not a fan of slap stick comedy but for some reason I do enjoy some of the Japanese ones. They are so silly and funny that they lift the spirit 😀

    1. Right? There’s just something about the way a Japanese drama pulls off the slapstick and the crazy… I don’t know how they do it but they somehow manage to make such dramas a whole lot of fun.
