To offset the overwhelming abundance of cute I’ve been floored by this week, I’ve decided to recommend a darker drama for this weekend’s marathon, one with action, mystery and suspense all centered around an oh-so-adorably un-dead male lead… Vampire Prosecutor.
Originally airing in 2011 on OCN, Vampire Prosecutor is a crime drama with a twist, in that the protagonist is a vampire who uses his supernatural powers to solve crimes and bring villains to justice. To put it another way, Vampire Prosecutor is like Angel meets CSI and yes, it’s that good!
Min Tae Yeon (Yun Jung Hoon) and his detective buddy, Hwang Soon Bum (Lee Wong Jong), along with rookie prosecutor Yoo Jung In (Lee Young Ah) and intern Cho Dong Man (Kim Joo Young) are members of a special crime solving collaboration between police and prosecutors whose sole task is to solve the murder cases everyone else has deemed unsolvable. Each new episode brings with ith another grisly murder but underlying the entire series is Min Tae Yeon’s relentless search for the vampire that turned him seven years ago.
Being something of a vampire junkie, I think Vampire Prosecutor is simply fantastic. I love the way Min Tae Yeon uses his vampire super-powers to solve crimes no one else can and I really love the chemistry and camaraderie between the main characters. It’s truly fantastic to watch them grow from perfect strangers to the perfect crime-solving team plus, as a bonus, there’s the slightest hint of a love interest between Min Tae Yeon and Yoo Jung In… Granted, it’s really more of a faint glimmer of something that might some day turn into more, but it’s enough of a start to make you search for Vampire Prosecutor 2 before the credits for the final episode of Vampire Prosecutor have finished rolling.
