Hallyu Zombie Drama Review: Doctor Stranger Episodes 3-4 (1/2)

The intrigue and humor of this drama leave me pleasantly surprised this week. While it is definitely a melodrama, there just happens to be enough medical theme and humor laced in to make it almost lighthearted. Lee Jong Suk continues to prove why he is near the top of my “amazing actors” list. He seamlessly moves between the different emotions in the show without any of the situations feeling off or out of place.

Hoon believes that Jae Hee is still in North Korea, so he works hard to earn money. This leads him to the hospital, where he runs into “500 won” girl and eventually ends up performing a surgery on her father that he really wasn’t authorized to perform. Hoon has a weakness for those who are in need, even when he know it can get him in trouble. The father survives and Hoon is chased throughout the hospital as people try to figure out who he is.

He is let go by the grace of Han Jae Joon, the current surgical prodigy, however Dr. Moon, the former-head-of-cardiology, chases him down to his clinic to try to convince him to work at the hospital. Hoon agrees, as long as there is money in it for him, however once everyone discovers he is from the North, the situation is left uncertain. With some appeal to Oh Joon Gyu, the head of the hospital, Hoon is allowed to start work.

Hoon is also greeted by a Jae Hee doppleganger by the name of Han Seung Hee who works at one of the hospital’s branch clinics. Although he is not sure who she is, she is at least a glimmer of hope that Jae Hee is alive and well instead of in a work camp in the North.

We were giving more of a glimpse into exactly who Dr. Oh Soo Hyun is in these episodes. It turns out she is the illegitimate child of Oh Joon Gyu and another woman. Her older half brother and his mother, Joon Gyu’s wife, despise her just as much as she hates them. She fully intends to unseat any position that her brother holds, which is why she’s moving from the cardiology department to the strategy department where she will be administration.

Although Soo Hyun and Hoon have had conflict throughout these past episodes, undoubtedly caused by Hoon’s cockiness, Soo Hyun ultimately turns to Hoon to help save her birth mother when she is brought to the hospital with terminal cancer by her half-brother who is seeking revenge. The chances of her mother surviving surgery is not likely, however Hoon is unwilling to let her die, ignoring her do-not-resuscitate order when she goes into cardiac arrest, so the minute Soo Hyun asks him to perform the surgery Hoon is more than ready to give it a try at least.

The week ended with Soo Hyun’s mother passing, as the surgery was unsuccessful. It does, however, show progress in the relationship between Hoon and Soo Hyun, which I am certain will be a integral part of the show. There is also some conflict created because Hoon is hugging Soo Hyun after he mother’s death and Jae Joon walks in on them doing so.

We’ll have to wait until next week to see where this goes. What is your favorite scene from this week? Are you enjoying Hoon’s almost bipolar cockiness/heartwarming personality? What will Jae Joon do about Hoon hugging Soo Hyun in his stead? Let me know in the comments below or leave me a message on Twitter: @Hallyu_Tanya!
