EXPLORING CHICAGO’S KOREAN SIDE: The K-Pop Store of Chinatown

2342

With all the attention Chicago has been getting on the K-Pop concert scene recently, I thought it might be kinda fun to start introducing my fellow fans to the wonderful Korean side of this fair city. 2319This way, when fans from out-of-town flock to the city for a concert, they can find places to indulge their taste for Korean culture and fill their bellies with all manner of delicious Korean food. (Because what self-respecting K-Pop fan doesn’t crave a steaming plate of ddeokbokki or a refreshing bowl of bingsu every now and then?) I thought it seemed only fitting to begin this new segment of mine with the sort of K-Pop mecca of Chicago. The one place every K-Pop fan who visits the City has to visit at least once (if not twice, or even thrice) while they’re here. The one… The only… THE K-POP STORE!

Located in the heart of Chicago’s Chinatown, the K-Pop Store is every K-Pop fan’s dream come true. 2311Overflowing with all manner of K-Pop goodness, this store is the place to go, whether you’re looking for your bias group’s latest album, or a pair of socks that bears your ulti’s face. From lightsticks to face masks, snapbacks to hoodies, jewelry, coffee mugs, posters, backpacks, pillows, nail art, cosmetics, drama OSTs and of course, albums, this store has it all and it’s wonderful! 2336I do have to warn you though, once you step foot through the front door, the urge to buy one of everything is VERY real! For those of you visiting from out-of-town, I recommend you either come with the entire contents of your savings account in your pocket or an iron will. Either one will help you, though I’ll tell you from experience, that iron will tends to corrode pretty quickly when you’re drooling over your biases.

2315I highly recommend allowing yourself plenty of time to wander around the store. There really is a lot of merch available and you don’t want to feel rushed as you browse. From front to back, floor to ceiling, this store is overflowing with all manner of K-Pop goodness and you’re definitely going to want to see it all. 2333While you’re browsing, be sure to take the time to talk to stop and talk to the shop’s owner, Ms. Ko. She’s a fount of K-Pop knowledge and is hands down, one of the sweetest people you will ever meet.

Chinatown ParkingIf you’re relying on public transportation to get you around the City, you can take the Red Line to Cermak. From there, all you’ve got to do cross Cermak and head about a block south on Wentworth and you’re there. If you’re driving to Chinatown, street parking is available but finding a place is tricky at best. You’d probably fare better if you parked in one of the public parking lots. 2332There’s a good one on the north-east corner of Cermak and Wentworth, right by the Red Line stop, and it’s a whole heck of a lot cheaper than a lot of the other downtown parking garages but it’s still not a cheap as street parking. If you’re lucky enough to score a parking spot on the street, I will warn you, those spots are strictly metered so be sure to keep track of your time. You don’t want to come crashing down from your K-Pop high by finding a $50 parking ticket stuck to your windshield. *ahem*

2338K-Pop Store

The building itself is pretty easy to find, sandwiched between the Chinatown Bazaar and the May Flower Restaurant. The bright pink “K-POP K-POP K-POP” running across the storefront does a good job of making the building stand out and you can’t miss all the band posters hung in the windows, tempting you to come… shop… buy…

2331If you’re coming to Chicago for a K-Pop concert, you can’t consider your trip complete without visiting Ms. Ko’s store. It’s a fantastic shop and one of my most favorite places to spend a lazy afternoon, though my wallet usually goes home in tears.

FROM CHICAGO TO KCON: ZOMBIE’S ADVENTURES IN L.A. – DAY 6

KCON 2014 9724

One would think that after spending an entire weekend running around KCON like a mad-woman, I’d be exhausted enough to sleep for more than a couple of hours but no. KCON 2014 9728Running two hours ahead was a curse I bore my entire time in L.A. and even on my last full day in the City of Angels, I was up by six with nothing to do but channel my inner ninja and get ready as quietly as possible (so as not to wake the comatose Tanya) before sneaking down to the lobby to check in with my family and wish my eldest a happy birthday. (Which I totally missed because I’m a bad mom who runs off to L.A. for a week instead of staying home to celebrate a birthday with my baby. At least she still loves me, even if I occasionally fail at being a mom.) Once the family was reassured I was still alive and I’d wished my baby a happy birthday, I figured it was about time for Tanya to be up so I grabbed us a couple of cups of coffee and headed back upstairs to see what plans we had for the day. FROM CHICAGO TO KCON: ZOMBIE’S ADVENTURES IN L.A. – DAY 3

KCON 2014 1028

laxBeing cursed to spend my entire week in L.A. running on Central Time, I woke up at an ungodly hour Friday morning and couldn’t go back to sleep so I did what any zombie in my position would do, I got up, got dressed and headed to the hotel lobby to grab a cup of coffee and call my family. I figured that since I hadn’t talked to them in a couple of days, it would probably be a good idea to at least let them know I hadn’t died. (A fear every single member of my family had while I was away. Crazy people!) With the obligatory phone calls out of the way, it was time to check in with the world and what did I happen to stumble across but pictures of VIXX at the airport in Seoul, posted during my brief hours of sleep. Naturally the fangirl in my couldn’t resist looking up flight arrival times and lo and behold, there were two flights scheduled to arrive at LAX within a half hour of each other and I knew VIXX was on one of them. KCON 2014 865Being the die-hard Starlight that I am, I couldn’t suppress the wails of my inner fangirl as I thought of VIXX arriving in L.A. without me there to greet them. I mean, ‘cmon! It’s not every day you get to be in the same place at the same time as your ultimate bias group and my entire week in L.A. seemed to be embracing the theme of “YOLO” (and I still can’t believe how many times Tanya and I “YOLO”ed ourselves while we were there… It’s almost embarrassing, really) so I did the only thing a self-respecting fangirl in my position would do. I tried to come up with a way to get myself to the airport to welcome VIXX when they arrived. Continue reading “FROM CHICAGO TO KCON: ZOMBIE’S ADVENTURES IN L.A. – DAY 3”

FROM CHICAGO TO KCON: ZOMBIE’S ADVENTURES IN L.A. – DAY 2

KCON 2014 050
KCON 2014 089While spending the night in a Korean spa is absolutely fantastic while you’re de-stressing in the sauna rooms, it doesn’t make for the best sleeping, unless you have the superpower that allows you to sleep soundly no matter where you are. (A superpower I, unfortunately, do not possess.) Even in the dark and supposedly quiet “sleeping room” I still spent a lot of time listening to people talking, TVs playing various K-dramas and even Henry’s “Fantastic” video (which I didn’t mind at all)matrix henry rather than sleeping. I know I dozed off a couple of times but by four in the morning, Tanya and I were both awake (the curse of being in L.A. while running on East Coast and central time) and ready to start our day. With most of the spa sound asleep, Tanya and I did the only logical thing one can do at four in the morning, we headed to the common area and grabbed a coffee and a bubble tea and enjoyed a little bit of quiet catching up time. From there it was back through all of the sauna rooms (and yes, the clay ball room was every bit as glorious as it had been the night before and surprisingly, so was the ice room) before getting cleaned up and setting out on our adventures for the day.
