TUNE OF THE WEEK: BTOB “Beep Beep”

February has proved to be a difficult month when it comes to deciding which song to feature in my weekly K-pop spotlight, not because there’s been a shortage of new music but because there’s been so much, I’ve had a tough time trying to narrow my favorite down to just one. This week, the tune that won out, over all the other contenders, is BTOB’s latest release “Beep Beep.”

1So what is it about “Beep Beep” that swayed me? I think it’s the quality of the music underlying some of the catchiest lyrics of the year. In true BTOB fashion, “Beep Beep” is a fusion of R&B, hip hop and pop overlying a beat that compels you to get up and dance. The music is fun, funky and varied, taking us through melodic 4verses, a ridiculously catchy chorus, Minhyuk’s rapping and a beautifully harmonious bridge that leads back into the chorus you’ll be singing for the rest of your life. However, just when you think “Beep Beep” is winding down, Ilhoon steps in with another rap and we leave this song wondering how such a fun and catchy tune can be about something as depressing as a painful breakup.

2This conundrum of ours is only intensified when we watch the MV for “Beep Beep.” As the boys sing and dance and drive around cute little mini-cars (which I totally want, by the way) we’re left wondering how in the world these boys can be so depressed they’re looking for the Han River Bridge when they seem to be having so much fun. Seriously, that whole party at the end of the MV makes me think the boys of BTOB aren’t really as upset about the loss of their girls as they 9think they are. That being said, I’m not going to hold the contradiction of their MV and their lyrics against them because honestly, I love BTOB too much to care about something so trivial. Yes, the fangirl in me is willing to turn a blind eye to such contradictions and simply enjoys the song for what it is, a ridiculously catchy tune that has me endlessly coming back for more. (Oh, and can I just say, that little “Rain” dance at around the 3:20 mark of this MV cracks me up!)

11Once again, BTOB has delivered a song that’s sure to make their Melodies proud but that’s simply one Melody’s opinion. Now that I’ve shared my thoughts on “Beep Beep” I’d love to hear yours so be sure to leave me a comment below!
