ZOMBIE’S DRAMA RAMBLINGS: The Struggles of Impossible Love, Pt. 1 – Moonlight Drawn By Clouds

off-we-go

I’m very painfully aware that it’s been ages since I last sat down to write anything even remotely related to dramas and I have no excuse for that other than, I suck. (Well, okay, maybe having 4 small zombies sucking away my heart, soul and free-time all summer might have a little something to do with it but “I suck” sums things up nicely and is a whole heck of a lot easier to write.)

With the zombies back in school, I’ve finally gotten back into a steady drama watching routine and I have to say, I am lovin’ every minute of it! I’ve desperately missed my dramas over the summer which is probably why I’m currently watching a whole slew at the moment. While normally I’d be picking a single drama to write about (and I’m actually going to start one very soon) I’ve decided to write a few rambling posts for no other reason than that I just need a place to talk about all these dramas I’m watching and maybe get some of you to chat with me. (Because there’s nothing worse than watching an incredible drama and not having anyone to talk about it with you.) The question is, where do I begin?

Since I titled this “The Struggles of Impossible Love” I suppose that’s where I should start. (I’m quick, I know.) As much as I love the dramas I’m watching I am struggling with a few of the love scenarios we’ve got going on, particularly those in Moonlight Drawn by Clouds, Scarlet Heart: Ryeo and Cinderella and Four Knights. It’s not that I’m upset with these dramas in any way, it’s just that I’m finding our heroines stuck in some impossibly difficult places and I’m worried about the pain in store for them, as they sort out their rather complicated love lives.

to-the-rescue

First up, let’s talk about our impossibly adorable eunuch in Moonlight Drawn by Clouds, and what a sticky situation she’s in at the moment. (Just, for reference, I’ve only watched through episode 6, so I won’t be talking anything that happens in week’s episodes. At least not yet.) Having just barely escaped being shipped off to the Qing empire, I’ve spent this past week deeply perplexed by the way things were left. Ra On has just been rescued by the Prince but does he know his most beloved eunuch is actually a girl? It seems to me everyone else in the entire world knows she’s not actually a man, which makes me think it would be impossible for the Prince not to know. But this is Dramaland we’re talking about here and main characters can be a little thick sometimes. So again I have to ask, does the Prince know Ra On’s secret? If he does, is he going to let her continue masquerading as a eunuch or will he force her into a more feminine role? If he chooses the former, how long will he let this charade continue? Won’t Ra On be in considerable danger, as long as she continues in this role? I know I’m not an expert on ancient Korean history or anything but doesn’t impersonating a man in Joseon earn you instant death? Would the Prince be willing to let Ra On continue being his eunuch when it means her life is in constant jeopardy? If he chooses the later, what on earth could he possibly line up for her that wouldn’t immediately put her in harm’s way? Everyone in the palace would recognize her as the eunuch and well, that just wouldn’t work. So where could Ra On go that the Prince would actually allow? I’m all for letting Ra On step into the role of Yoon Sung’s woman (as he once called her) for a while but something tells me the Prince wouldn’t be too keen on that idea.

On the flip side, what if the Prince still doesn’t know the truth? As unlikely as that seems, if this were to be the case, he’s eventually going to find out and when he does, how is he going to handle being lied to by the one person he thought he could trust? This seems like a messy place to be and it’s not one I particularly care to watch, which is why I’m hoping the Prince already knows the truth. But what if he doesn’t? Just how much would the Prince make Ra On suffer before he decided to forgive her? I know I could be worrying about nothing here but my mind is just too full of musing and I need to let them loose somewhere!

Aside from all of these “does he know” questions, I find myself worrying more about what’s going to happen to Ra On and the Prince farther into the future. I mean this is Joseon we’re talking about here; falling in love with a Prince doesn’t automatically earn you a happy ending. So what do these two little love chickadees have in store for them? Personally, I’m hoping for a whole bunch of sunshine and rainbow ponies but I know that’s not going to happen because this is Dramaland and nothing good happens here without a whole bunch of bad coming with it. As long as the bad doesn’t become too painful and it ultimately leads to a happy ending, I’ll be okay. I think…

So now that I’ve thrown all of these questions out into the universe, I want to know what your thoughts are on all of this. Do you think the Prince knows the truth? Whether he does or doesn’t, how is he going to handle all of these feelings he’s developing for Ra On? How much longer do you think Ra On is going to have to play the part of the eunuch? We all know Yoon Sung is never going to have a chance to win Ra On’s heart (because it’s already been taken by the Prince) but what part do you see him playing in the larger story? Will he cause trouble for our two love birds or will he become an invaluable ally to them? (After all, he’s already come to their aide once. Will he continue in this role or become a more serious love rival?) Do you think our OTP will eventually find a happy ending or will be bawling our eyes out by the end of this drama? You know I always love hearing from you so be sure to let me know what you’re thinking by leaving me a comment below!
