ZOMBIE’S DRAMA REVIEW: Hyde, Jekyll and I Episodes 11-12

hug

This week’s episodes of Hyde, Jekyll and I are all about struggle as Dr. Yoon struggles to accept the truth, Ha Na struggles with her feelings and Robin and Seo Jin struggle to survive. With so many conflicts to resolve, we’ve got much to discuss to let’s get to it!

talking

Picking up where we left off last week, Ha Na finds herself making connections and drawing conclusions that really don’t make sense, at least not in her head. It’s not until Seo Jin pulls his little “stay there and watch me sleep” stunt that Ha Na finally gets the answer she’s looking for, though it’s still not an answer she’s ready to accept. I can totally understand her need to step back and think things over for a while, though her being away from the house made me insanely nervous. (I kept waiting for Dr. Yoon to jump out of nowhere and drag her off somewhere horrible but he didn’t. Whew!) While Ha Na is off contemplating things she comes to a very interesting conclusion and it’s one I think will play a crucial part as this story begins to draw to a close. Ha Na realizes that in all the time she’s known both Robin and Seo Jin, Robin has been the one to comfort her and she’s been the one to comfort Seo Jin. While this doesn’t make her decision making any easier, it does show that she’s had a connection with both sides of Seo Jin for as long as she’s known him and that’s not something she’s going to take lightly. I don’t think Ha Na is the type of person who could only accept one side of Seo Jin’s personality so when she finally agrees to give things a try with Robin, I see that as her way of accepting Seo Jin as well. Perhaps she’s not agreeing to love both sides of Seo Jin but she’s at least acknowledging the fact that you can’t take one side of this man without taking on the other as well. She knows as long as Robin is around, Seo Jin will also be around and she’s finally realized she’s okay with this. My question is, now that she knows there’s a third, horrible and nasty, personality lurking somewhere in there, is she going to be able to accept him too? I don’t think anyone wants to think about the possibility of Terry making an appearance but he’s already made his presence known. Who’s to say he won’t show up more frequently before the end?

planting thoughts

I guess I wouldn’t be too worried about Terry’s appearance and how Robin and Seo Jin are going to survive if Dr. Yoon weren’t in the picture but he is and he’s scary. Sure, he may be all sweet and adorable when he’s got his happy face on around Ha Na but we all know that beneath the surface he’s a very messed up man. It’s becoming ever more apparent that Dr. Yoon is in need of some serious therapy. Maybe that’s why he ultimately decided to let Dr. Kang go. He was afraid she’d start trying to treat him and he couldn’t have that messing up his plans. Actually, I’m pretty sure Dr. Yoon had no intention of letting Dr. Kang escape. He seemed extremely frustrated when Terry gave way to Robin and I have a feeling he’s going to blame Ha Na for this botched up plan. If that’s the case, I’m even more afraid for Ha Na’s safety and not just because Dr. Yoon may come after her. Dr. Yoon made a very big deal about the number of times Ha Na has been hypnotized by him and he suggested himself that he may have already planted something nasty in her head. If that’s the case, what has he put there and when is that going to manifest itself? I’m sure Dr. Yoon is waiting for the perfect time to use his greatest pawn but what, exactly, is he going to have her do? It kills me to not know this, mostly because I’m afraid it’s going to be beyond awful and there’s not going to be anything anyone can do to stop it. I mean how do you fight something you don’t even know has been planted in your head? That’s why Dr. Yoon scares me so much. It’s because he has the power to manipulate people’s minds without them ever being the wiser and that’s just plain terrifying!

Terry

It’s all of this messing with people’s heads that has me worried about Seo Jin and Robin as well. I know Seo Jin has never succumb to Dr. Yoon’s hypnosis but Robin has and we saw what the result of that was! If Terry can be summoned by Dr. Yoon, he could be called upon at any time and at any place and who’s to say there will be someone there to snap Robin back to consciousness? We got lucky this week but who’s to say we’ll be so luck next time? And I’m convinced there will be a next time. If Terry is a personality created by Robin, Robin is going to have to be the one to deal with him. I don’t think is going to be easy, by any means but it’s going to have to happen and soon. I have a feeling it’s this conflict between the two sides of Robin that’s ultimately going to convince Robin that he needs to submit to Seo Jin. (If that’s even the right way to phrase this.) Robin has made it perfectly clear that he wants to survive. He wants to live and love and do everything he wants to do as his own separate individual and I can totally understand that. The problem lies in the fact that he’s not actually his own person. He’s a different part of Seo Jin and he cannot exist on his own. If Seo Jin disappears, so does Robin. I just don’t think Robin understands this. He sees Seo Jin as an obstacle in his way, someone who’s holding him back and there’s a very good chance Robin may try to take over as the dominate personality. However, even if he does manage to kick Seo Jin out, Robin’s still going to have to live as Seo Jin because the rest of the world will only ever see him as such. You can’t just take over someone’s life and expect the world to accept this other you. It’s not going to happen and Robin needs to understand this. Unfortunately, I don’t think Robin has the capacity to look very far beyond himself. He’s so absorbed in his own feelings and desires, he never stops to consider things from anyone else’s position, especially not Seo Jin’s. Robin still sees Seo Jin as a threat and that needs to change.

walk in the park

If Robin never gets over his own selfishness, at least we can say Seo Jin is changing and for the better. After living so many years trying to run away from his past, he’s finally beginning to not just accept it but also deal with it. Little by little, Seo Jin is coming to terms with the ghosts of his past and he’s letting the experiences mold him into a better person. In short, he’s healing and that makes my heart so happy. Seo Jin is such a tragic character and he still has so much to deal with but he’s trying and that’s what matters. It’s obvious Seo Jin still has a long way to go before he’s fully recovered but he’s on the right path and he’s got Ha Na beside him. Well, sort of anyway. I’m not sure she was quite ready to hear his rather abrupt and totally unexpected confession but now that he’s made his feelings know, at least she knows how to deal with him. Maybe? Haha. I guess this is the most confusing part of this entire drama… Trying to decide which side of Seo Jin Ha Na should end up with. Personally, I’m still rooting for Seo Jin but I guess, as is usually the case when it comes to dramas, we’re just going to have to wait and see.

  1. Oh boy. The third person kind of threw me for a loop. Robin had mentioned early on in the drama that “you know what I can be like” to the men with stun guns.
I guess this was what he was talking about. It can’t be a very strong character if a single conversation with HaNa can diffuse it. I’m not really buying into it, but this is drama land. I’m also not buying into the idea that a psychiatrist can hypnotize people and plant suggestions that he can manipulate for his own evil purposes. It seems far-fetched, but I’ll admit that it adds to the suspense (and overall creepiness of Dr. Yoon).

Seo Jin is changing in so many positive ways. He has stopped being controlled by fear and is facing it head on with a confidence we have never seen. I’m so proud of him! He has taken the huge risk of showing himself, warts and all, to the woman that he wants to love. I hope she can accept him – all of him. Each side matches a missing piece in her. As much as she wants to think that she is in love with only Robin, part of her realizes that she loves all of him. We saw that this week. When she tells Robin she wants to try to be with him, I feel like she is saying that to both sides of him. He was a little pathetic at the end. It was sad to realize that he has been hiding his deep hurt behind a mask of playfulness as much as SeoJin was hiding his hurt behind a wall of seriousness.

I still have some questions that I’m looking forward to having answered. Dr. Kang told Dr. Yoon that she wouldn’t leave him, yet he managed to get her rescued. What will her role be now? Will she turn him in or lie to the police and try to treat him on the sly? And how will Dr. Yoon use the hypnosis on Robin and HaNa? Will their deep bond for each other be able to break the spell? And what exactly happened with the kidnapping? Dr. Yoon’s dad was a co-conspirator? And he just happened to die on the way to the site? What happened to the boy Dr. Yoon who was left behind? I’m a little confused but still enjoying this.

    1. There are certainly still a lot of questions to be answered but we have time to get everything sorted before the end. I’m as curious as you are to see what’s going to happen now that Dr. Kang has been rescued. You’d think she’d turn him in and the gig would be up but who knows? If she really thinks she can cure both Seo Jin and Dr. Yoon, would that be something she’d do without informing the police? It doesn’t seem like a good idea but this is drama land and bad ideas abound.

I have to agree with you about Robin and his weakness this week. He’s kind of turning into a bit of a disappointment for me. He seems to be clinging onto Ha Na too much, at least for my taste. Seo Jin, on the other hand, is such a perfect hero. He’s learning and growing and changing and it’s all for the better. He’s trying to become a better person, he’s trying to get his life back, he’s trying to become a man worthy of Ha Na’s love and I can’t help but admire him for that.

As for Dr. Yoon and all of his mind manipulation. I don’t really buy it either, at least not in a real-world setting, but here, in drama land, I’m okay with going along with it, even if it is far-fetched. Dr. Yoon wouldn’t be nearly as creepy as he is if he couldn’t mess with people’s heads and I’ll be the first to admit, I love him because he’s so darn creepy. Well, I’m not really sure how much I can love an insane criminal mastermind… Let’s just say that he’s at the top of my list of bad guys. He’s intelligent, he’s sneaky, he’s the master of playing both sides, in short he’s everything a bad guy should be and I love him for that, even if he does seriously creep me out.

  2. I’m glad someone’s talking about how selfish Robin is being. Other places, people just discuss their Robin-Hana or Seojin-Hana or the crappy plot and loopholes. But really, Robin and Seojin occupy the same body, how does they expect a girl to choose just one of them? What will she do the rest of the time that Robin’s not around? This must happen though IRL to people with the disorder, but I’m glad Hana is being rational by choosing to embrace both the personalities (lucky girl??! or not, if Terry appears), even though it’s possible they might not reintegrate. Seojin’s lines are so romantic hahahaha. Why is he so swoon-worthy of late? Robin doesn’t do anything for me, I guess I find him too polite and formal and boring. Dr. Yoon is too powerful and a ridiculous waste of screentime, when they could be exploring the Robin-Hana-Seojin triangle.

    1. I’ve always favored Seo Jin over Robin, I don’t know why, I just have. Maybe it’s because, like you said, he’s too polite and formal and boring. I mean there’s no denying he’s cute and all but there’s something in Seo Jin that Robin lacks. Maybe it’s just Seo Jin isn’t afraid to go after the things he wants and Robin’s more willing to just wait around and let things happen. I mean Robin would have never confessed to Ha Na if she hadn’t done so first while with Seo Jin, he’s just like “I love you and I’m gonna fight for you” and that’s it. There’s no waiting around and no misunderstandings and I like that. You’re right about Dr. Yoon being way too powerful. He really is and that’s why he’s scary. He could do whatever he wanted and no one would ever know. I’m hoping now that Dr. Kang has been rescued, she’ll tell everyone the truth about Dr. Yoon and things will start to resolve. They kinda have to, seeing as how we’ve only got four more weeks left in this series. Here’s hoping for endings that wrap things up nicely and make sense. I’d hate for this drama to fall apart at the last minute because I’m really enjoying it, so far…
