While last week’s episode was a bit on the dry side, this week more than made up for it with action, drama, romance, humor and two, count them TWO, shirtless Musketeers. (Oh thank the drama gods, this Monday just got a whole lot better!)
Picking up where we left off last week, the Prince asks Dal Hyang to find Mi Ryeong and bring her to him which doesn’t really sit well with Dal Hyang because, let’s face it, if the Prince is asking for a woman to be brought to him, it’s not going to go over well when the person he’s asking just so happens to be the former love interest of the Princess. We all know Dal Hyang’s been in love with the Princess for the past five years and though he’s vowed to forget her, now that he’s learned she’s the Princess, we all know how well that works in Drama Land. Being charged with a mission that could bring infinite pain to the Princess isn’t an easy task, especially not when it’s been assigned by the Prince and there’s no way you can back out of it and Dal Hyang has no choice but to obey, which stinks for him but made for some interesting moments for us.
First of all, stopping the Prince on his way out the door wasn’t the best idea Dal Hyang ever had but it did give us a chance to see the more punk-ish side of Sohyeon. Well, I suppose Sohyeon isn’t really being too much of a punk, he’s simply reminding Dal Hyang that there’s a distance between the two of them and it’s not really cool to be treating the Prince like your equal. I think Sohyeon had a bit too much fun setting Dal Hyang in his place, which is why I think he’s a bit of a punk. He wasn’t really being mean to Dal Hyang but Sohyeon really did enjoy watching Dal Hyang squirm almost as much as he enjoyed watching Yoon Seo squirm when he caught her in his room.
I really did have to laugh when Yoon Seo’s mother gave her that talisman and charged her with the nearly impossible task of sneaking it under the Prince’s pillow. I knew right away that wasn’t going to work (because when to things like that ever work in a drama?) and I enjoyed watching Yoon Seo attempt to brush the whole incident off as nothing, even if it didn’t work. The Prince is far too cunning for his own good and he uses his wits to torment his poor wife whenever possible. (Again, I say he’s a punk.) At least most of the time Sohyeon isn’t really tormenting Yoon Seo to be mean, he’s simply teasing her, most likely because he likes watching her reactions (which, you have to admit, are really pretty great). I think if Yoon Seo could learn to lighten up a little around Sohyeon and decide not to let his teasing get to her so much, she might stand a better chance of moving beyond this very shallow relationship they have into something more. I’m not saying the Prince is going to fall madly in love with her overnight but if Yoon Seo could reflect on the little hints Sohyeon has given to her about his past and himself, she might find a way to work her way through the wall he’s built around himself and that would certainly make her life a lot less miserable. (It probably wouldn’t hurt the Prince any either.)
While we’re talking about things that made us laugh, I couldn’t help but crack up at the whole scene with Min Seo and his “bath”. Oh my goodness! Talk about funny! All I could think about throughout that entire scene was how very similar those women were to the hordes of fangirls who would have done the exact same thing, had their bias been in Min Seo’s shoes. It just made me laugh so much. Poor Min Seo, he’s going to have to watch himself or all the vows he made as a monk may come to naught.
Moving on… Please tell me I’m not the only person seriously doubting the sanity of the King at the moment. ‘Cause seriously, this guy has some MAJOR problems and none of them have to do with the Qing or the Ming or anyone else. This guy is seriously disturbed and for the good of the country, I hope someone figures this out soon because really, having a crazy at the helm isn’t going to make life pleasant for anyone. I get that the pressures of ruling a country are probably far beyond what any of us could ever even begin to imagine but still, there’s a difference between being stressed and being down-right crazy and I’m afraid the King has crossed over into Loopy Land. Having nightmares is one thing but having vivid hallucinations in your waking hours is a pretty good sign that you need to stop whatever it is you’re doing and take a little vacation. The King has already admitted the country would be better off in Sohyun’s hands so why doesn’t he just step aside and let his son take over? I think that would be a much better decision than rashly ordering the execution of the Qing envoy’s leader and throwing your country headlong into another war. Way to go King!
As bad as things have been for the King, he’s not the only one having a tough time and I can’t help but feel bad for Dal Hyang as his first day on the job was quite a doozy! From finding his letter from Yoon Seo in the hands of Mi Ryeong, to being poisoned, to jumping out a second story window, to coming face to face with Yong Gol Dae, he’s had his hands full! At least he’s a pretty resourceful guy (and apparently a quick healer) which means he’s probably going to come out of this encounter with Gol Dae in one piece but it’s probably going to be rough. Crossing swords with the leader of the Qing army, while still groggy from being poisoned, doesn’t seem to give you the best odds of survival but this is Drama Land and the Three Musketeers aren’t far off so perhaps Dal Hyang will get lucky and make it out of this one alive. Okay, we all know he’s going to make it out alive because he’s the star but still… We’ve got to have a little suspense to entice us back next week! Of course another preview of a shirtless Dal Hyang would have been just as effective… Just sayin’.
